This is an ancient shape for a cross that is still a favorite in many parts of the world. It originated from the Chi Rho, a popular monogram for Christ made of the first two letters of "CRISTOS", greek for "Christ". Eventually the appendages to the letters were dropped, leaving a cross of four equal lengths.
