When Christy's best friend dies of typhoid, she angrily questions her faith as she tries to reconcile her beliefs with the tragedy of a young, loving mother being taken away from her family and friends. In the meantime, David, Dr. MacNeill and Alice are struggling to save as many lives as they can through prayer and whatever medicine is available to them. Eventually, Alice is able to guide Christy back to the church, and when she does, Christy begins to see God-and David-in a new light.
