Ridgewood Analogies has been used successfully in first through eighth grade in the Ridgewood, New Jersey, public schools for more than ten years. The need to develop this curriculum was born out of teachers' frustration with traditional material that did not empower students--either as thinkers or as problem solvers. Regardless of academic ability, many students are easily confused and upset by the ambiguity of puzzling situations. They haven't learned how to figure out what to do when confronted by nonroutine or perplexing problems--even when they have the knowledge and the skills to do so. The materials in this book are designed to remedy that problem--to help students be independent thinkers and problem-solvers. The processes involved in solving and creating analogies empower both teachers and students. Thinking analogically requites learners to: *actively process information *make important connections *use information and skills to identify relationships *construct relationships and generate new knowledge *improve understanding, comprehension, and long-term memory.
