Once I started reading real books at age six, I never stopped. My first friends in print were Laura Ingalls Wilder from the Little House on the Prairie series and Aslan and the Pevensies from the Chronicles of Narnia series. I finished both series and hungered for more. I grew up in a wholehearted home where books permeated every part of my life-their stories and insights filled my heart and mind. Eighteen years and thousands of books later, I don't live to read, I read to live. Good and godly books, great literature, and written works of grace and beauty feed my soul and enlarge my vision for life. The Bible of course is my source of true life and inspiration, bringing my spirit in communion with God's Spirit. He has told the eternal story of redemption through His revelation. Others have re-told the daily story of redemption through their imaginations. For me, books become pictures and portraits of truth painted with words, adding color and depth to the canvas of life. Moms and dads are always asking my parents and me, "What should my child read and when should they read it?" When we first started talking about a book on books for wholehearted families to answer this question and many others, it seemed natural for me to take up the call and the challenge. All the books we wanted to recommend to other families, books that are on our bookshelves, were in me. Since those initial conversations, I have been immersed in a deep sea of books-rediscovering many old friends, finding new ones, compiling lists, writing reviews, and collecting my own thoughts about books and reading. It has been a wonderful journey, and Read for the Heart: Whole Books for Wholehearted Families is my travel log. I pray that this book will be a map you can use to set your children on their own journey with books-picture books, Golden Age books, children's fiction, imaginative literature, historical fiction, spiritual works, poetry, books on nature and the arts, and more.
