Minstrel in the Tower is set in the year 1195, France. Roger and Alice live alone with their mother in a tiny cottage. Their father, a knight, left five years earlier to fight in the Crusades and never returned. When Roger's and Alice's mother falls dangerously ill, she sends them on a quest to find an uncle they never knew they had. They take with them their mother's lute. "Show him the eagle carved on the back," she tells them. "Ask him to come quickly. Quickly!" Things become complicated when they are captured by outlaws, and their lute--the only proof of their identity--is stolen.
