In the preparation of this book it has been the author's aim to avoid complexity of plan, as far as possible. Hence it will be observed that he has simplified the ordinary vowel sounds. The differences between the sound o in nor and not; of a in fall and wad, as well as between u in rule and tube, seems too nice to be appreciated by an unpracticed ear. These distinctions being unnecessary, and tending only to embarrass the learner, have not been retained. In the orthography of such words as music, public, formerly terminating with ck; and in favor, honor, formerly spelled our, the k and u are omitted, agreeably to the principles of Dr. Webster, whose philological labors entitle him to the gratitude of every American. The reading lessons, most of which are new, have been progressively arranged; and it is hoped they will be found both interesting and instructive.
