Handprints workbooks accompany the storybooks and prepare students for unlocking unfamiliar words they will encounter. One workbook generally spans one half year of instruction. In this workbook, students review letter formation; develop phonemic awareness skills by listening for initial and final consonant sounds, vowel sounds, and onsets and rimes; learn to read new words through analogies with known words; expand their knowledge of high frequency words; and begin to use inflections, contractions, and compound words. The primary purpose of the workbook is to assist students in using print (phonetic) cues, along with meaning and language cues, in reading texts such as the Handprints storybooks.
