Handprints workbooks accompany the storybooks and prepare students for unlocking unfamiliar words they will encounter. One workbook generally spans one half year of instruction. In this workbook, students develop phonemic awareness through rhyming, initial sound, and final sound activities; gain independence in forming uppercase and lowercase letters; associate letters with key words and initial sounds; and begin to build a supply of high-frequency sight words. The primary purpose of the workbook is to assist students in using print (phonetic) cues, along with meaning and language cues, in reading texts such as the Handprints storybooks.
