Are Tattoos Alright? posted in General on 3/19/10 @ 5:37 PM by Japlace

Hey yall! sooo im wondering what you guys think about tattoos...
I, personally, dont think they are alright. And basically my only reasoning for that decision is cuz we are to treat our bodies as the temple of God like they are, and putting ink into your skin seems like spray painting a church. Dont get me wrong, im not saying those who have tattoos are in the wrong by any means! Thats just my opinion, anyways, tell me what you think? -) <-- thats mr. alien face btw! lol

Just wanted to bring to attention that no where in the bible does it state tattoos are forbidden! Its a matter of ur taste and if u like them or not and what they represent. Now I see a lot of you say well look at Leviticus 19:28 ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am Lord......well Leviticus also states Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard...its also states in Leviticus...thou shall not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment shall a garment mingled of linen woollen come upom thee..... So basically what I am getting at is all these were under the old law in which Jesus came and fulfilled the law so we are not under the old law no more.............So all of you who still follow Leviticus I expect none of you to shave or trim ur beards or not to get haircuts and not where clothes where to fabrics are sewed together!......you cant just pull leviticus 19:28 out and ignore what the rest of what it says! So I guess its a good thing Jesus came and fullfilled the law for Us All!

Japlace - 4/28/10 @ 2:17 PM

"So basically what I am getting at is all these were under the old law in which Jesus came and fulfilled the law so we are not under the old law no more" - PHBOI

Yes He did, but the law says ye shall not murder as well. so if we are free from the law, can we murder?

PutHisBloodOnIt - 4/28/10 @ 3:46 PM

Now japlace you know better than to ask a question like that! We still have the commandments to follow!

So are you suggesting we should follow levitical laws? If so we better change our lifestyle fast and begin following levitical law cause we have alot of changing to do then!

Like I said before you cant pull one thing out of the old law and say it is sinful but not follow the rest of the laws and not consider them sinful or wrong! Then you would be picking and choosing what you want to follow.

Katie - 4/28/10 @ 4:41 PM

I personally have two tattoos that remind me everyday of where I have been, and where I am going, and although neither of them are religious I see nothing wrong with them. Which brings me to another question: If cutting your body is considered sinful than what about piercings? Is everyone that has their ears pierced sinning?

PutHisBloodOnIt - 4/28/10 @ 4:49 PM

I dont believe so Katie because that passage is referring to pagan rituals where they use to cutt their body for dead relatives. Anyways it doesnt matter because that was under the old law which we are not bound under which i previously stated, because if we were then tattoos would be wrong along with cutting and eating meat with blood on it, men having certian haircutts, trimming beards etc....

Katie - 4/28/10 @ 4:55 PM

Okay then what about the "your body is a temple" argument? That is one that I get frequently...

PutHisBloodOnIt - 4/28/10 @ 5:10 PM

Yeah i knew that would come up! lol ok some people say our body is a temple and we should take good care of it and not mark or abuse it. So I say should we not play sports then? We get bruises and bang up our body! Or being obese is not healthy for your body so is it sinful to be fat and not eat foods which are unhealthy and not put in our bodies? I look at things logically cause if you use your body is a temple arguement than we ought to do NOTHING that causes our body to feel pain or damage it.

its sad the thread already exists yet no one checks it,

http://www.c28.com/streetteam/forumtopic.asp?TopicID=94&Page=5

pages 5 to the end..

every point in witch people on this forum try to argue justify tattoos is adressed in the old thread, with the most honest and bible literate answers from lots of people, does anyone hear even own a hebrew or greek translation and have studied the origin of the word, has anyone studied the full history of tattoos in all nations?

James 1:22 (New International Version)

22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Matthew 5:17-20 (New King James Version)

WORDS OF JESUS HIMSELF

17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

2 Timothy 3:16 (New King James Version)

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

key word is ALL scripture, hear its in greek for you

–noun (RE)PROOF
1.
evidence sufficient to establish a thing as true, or to produce belief in its truth.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (New King James Version)

19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body[a] and in your spirit, which are God’s.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (New King James Version)

16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

Romans 12:1-2 (New King James Version)

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Leviticus 19:28 (New King James Version)

28 You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the LORD.

1 John 2:15-17 (New King James Version)

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

1 Corinthians 6:19 (New King James Version)

19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

Romans 14:23 (New King James Version)

23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.[a]

Ephesians 5:9 (New King James Version)

PutHisBloodOnIt - 4/28/10 @ 6:03 PM

Everything u just put up gives no proof on saying that tattoos are sinful and Christians are not to get them!!

justin, a lowly slave of Christ. - 4/28/10 @ 6:13 PM

have you studied the origin in all nations of tattoos?(there demonic)the bible warns us about picking up pagan things to use as our own. have you studied the word in hebrew?

the holy bible is Gods messege to us, he says every word is valid,

in leviticus , he is saying something directly to us and even finishing with IAM THE LORD..to let us know who said it this sounds like a direct command from god to not get tattoos, and a lot less of a law

did you read pages 5 to 9 in the old thread?.. did you read the link i posted in the old thread?

PutHisBloodOnIt - 4/28/10 @ 6:21 PM

ok then we should not use wedding rings in marriage because that come from pagan origin, christmas trees come from pagan origins, so does easter eggs... alot of things we do or celebrate today come from pagan origin!Should we stop all those things too?

ok in leviticus it says do not mark your body for the DEAD!So if we have to follow leviticus still then you are going against the Lords word by cutting your hair (your mohawk) or shaving your beard and wearing clothes with different fabrics sewed together!

Katie - 4/28/10 @ 6:26 PM

Obviously I am looking at loop holes and just fine with that, because I am going to continue getting art put on my body. As far as being a pagan act and being a demonic origin I would like to know where exactly you are getting this from, because the earliest use of tattoos known was in the 12000 BC used for tribes showing what talents they have (ie what work they do). and if EVERY word that God says is valid then why does he contradict himself in the old and new testament?

I am not doubting that demonic people have tattoos i am just saying that that is not their purpose at all and from what I have seen and heard it never has been. Yes demonic people get them, but demonic people also wear black, so should we all stop wearing black because demonic people do?

justin, a lowly slave of Christ. - 4/28/10 @ 6:38 PM

this is already in the old thread...

lolol i dont have a mohawk any more

not just for the dead

, nor tattoo any marks on you .... hebrew hebrew hebrew study the hebrew...

ill get back to you on the rest later i gotta go run errends sorry,,

PutHisBloodOnIt - 4/28/10 @ 6:41 PM

sorry I thought u still might have had the same haircut lol.. i shortened the verse i know what it says in hebrew im typing from my phone trying to make it short sorry.K I will sit here and wait for you lol

Mstar - 4/28/10 @ 7:10 PM

i agree with kasey...cause if someone is interested in tattoos and see you have a cool looking christian tattoo..they might ask about it which gives you a perfect opportunity to witness to them..i know someone who loves c28 so much he has like a bunch of tats from c28...he has the
"faithfulness" thing across his chest...the NOTW logo..the tree with Jesus hidden in it..ect...and they all look really cool :) so i think its ok if they can be used to glorify God or witness..

justin, a lowly slave of Christ. - 4/28/10 @ 8:53 PM

witnessing can be caused by things good or bad, if iam speeding around town on a high speed chase in a lambo that has a giant sticker on the back that says speed for christ. iam sure i would get alot of attention and people would flock to me to ask about why iam doing what iam doing and i could capitilize on the opertunity to tell them about jesus.. BUT speeding is STILL agisnt the law and iam STILL breaking the law and thats not a true christ-like behavior.. thats just luring the world to jesus using the world. it doesent justify my speeding.. perfect example i have big a tattoo on the back of my leg thats very gang affiliated. people ask me about it all the time, i can tell them yah i used to be lost but now iam found, gave my life to jesus yada yada yada,,the same with a faith orianted tat. it might look cool to the world and be great for witnessing but it doesent justify it in the eyes of god no matter what.. if youth pastors played south park on a big screen for the kids to show up so that the pastor can preach to them kids would flock to it, but its still wrong.

justin, a lowly slave of Christ. - 4/28/10 @ 9:07 PM

yah i want my mohawk back but my buddy called me a pagen and i felt all convicted lol

in witchcraft a tattoo is a way for a demon to easily enter a person. do we wanna open ourselfs to demonic influence anymore than we already are.

there are places across the globe from one an other that worshipped demon gods and the had no way of contacting eachother that used tattoos to worshipp there gods.. these two places had the EXACT same tattoos for strikingly similar gods, do we realy wanna use that same method to worship or witness our own true and pure god.

from the last thread

xodus 23:24, "Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images." Exodus 34:13, "But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves: "

Deuteronomy 7:25, "The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God."

Numbers 16:26, "And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins."

And if those verses didnt make it plain enough, read this one (especially the last part).

Deuteronomy 12:2-4, "Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree: and ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place. Ye shall not do so unto the Lord your God."

God is saying in that verse to not only destroy these places, practices and devices, but then emphasizes, basically, that ye shall not try to recycle these things in ANY kind of worship to your God. Dont reuse the wood. Dont reuse the silver or gold. Dont emulate or copy the heathens style of worship. Touch none of it! Why would you even want to offer to the Lord something that the pagan nations offered to their false gods? Gods word could not be any plainer than that!

Not only does God tell us not to follow the heathens practices; God doesnt want us even inquiring about what they did or how they did it because He knows that we would try to emulate them. Deuteronomy 12:29-30, "When the Lord thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land; take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise." We cant say, "Good idea. Im gonna do that too, but to honor my God."

as for witnessing

5) BUT MY TATTOO IS A WITNESSING TOOL.

Many people will say that their tattoo opens doors with a certain crowd of people, gives them cultural authenticity, or that it is helpful as a witnessing tool. To that I would say that Christs apostles and disciples "preached Jesus" through their actions and words. They didnt need gimmicks or cool fashions or fads of the day to relate to people and neither do we!

You dont need physical piercings to relate to people. The Bible says in Hebrews 4:12, "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Gods Holy word is the only "piercing" thing that will save people! The disciples preached Gods word, lived by Gods commands. People saw Jesus living through them and learned what it meant to be saved by hearing them preaching Gods word and seeing the fruit of their lives. The disciples didnt try to be fashionable like the world. They didnt seek to entertain the world.

Matthew 5:16, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Your light, not your tat)

Our Christian light should shine. We should not be busy taking on the worlds image. We should not be concerned with looking such a way that is pleasing to men. Galatians 1:10, "For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ." Acts 5:29, "We ought to obey God rather than men."

For those who say, "But I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some" (1 Corinthians 9:22), I say to you that Gods word has already shown us that we are NOT to be conformed to this wicked and adulteress world. Do I have to smoke crack or marijuana so that I can relate to those who are on drugs? Do I have to dress like a whore and hang out on the street corners so that I can try to witness to my lost sisters who are prostitutes? Should I join a gang and take on the trademarks of a certain "set" so that I can speak to those young men who are obviously in need of a relationship with our Savior? Of course not! This dark world needs the Light. It does not need us to come down to its dark, fleshly level.

thats also from the old thread...

justin, a lowly slave of Christ. - 4/28/10 @ 9:14 PM

@ put his blood on it.. also we cant say that : look nowhere in the bible does it say tats are a sin. only OT law and OT law is out,, there are many things only mentioned in OT that still shouldent be done.. such as beastiality.. yup only OT . so technically the same argument that people use to justify tats..also justifys beastiality.. you cant say tats are ok but beastiality isnt cuz the fall under the same law and same circumstances of argument..

justin, a lowly slave of Christ. - 4/28/10 @ 9:26 PM

one more thing, this is something that realy bothers me, people we cant say if WE think it glorifies god its ok... man! god told us how he is to be glorified! threw following christ! (and christ didnt conform to the world he spokeaginst it)seriosly saying i think god would like something or its okay to do something cuz its for god, thats making an image of god. your assuming god is a certian way, God is eternal and unchanging. he is who he is and what he says has said and will say always means the same at all times.

"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."

Katie - 4/28/10 @ 10:56 PM

Justin:
Tattoos do not originate from pagan beliefs, pagans have gotten them but that is not where they come from. So okay tattoos are wrong, all these bible verses are cool and all, but show me where in the bible it says not to put ink in your skin.
My tattoos are not for anyone else as I have stated before. I have one on my foot and one on my rib cage (both places are not seen). They are not for attention, they are not to glorify God they are for ME. They remind me of where I have been and where I am going and to remember I am a strong person. NO my tattoos do not shine for me, God shines through me just fine just fine.
