Are Tattoos Alright? posted in General on 3/19/10 @ 5:37 PM by Japlace

Hey yall! sooo im wondering what you guys think about tattoos...
I, personally, dont think they are alright. And basically my only reasoning for that decision is cuz we are to treat our bodies as the temple of God like they are, and putting ink into your skin seems like spray painting a church. Dont get me wrong, im not saying those who have tattoos are in the wrong by any means! Thats just my opinion, anyways, tell me what you think? -) <-- thats mr. alien face btw! lol

"In turn he has been able to witness to his girlfriend (they are now married and attending our church) and other friends because they have seen the new ink and question him about it specifically because he has other ink from before that wasnt so hot." - LittleMiss

Thats awesome, but it wasnt the tattoo they noticed different about him. yes tat proly showed them he was serious bout his new faith, but what made them really see a change in him was proly his attitude. Christ changed his life, and in result changed his friends. his new ink had no more effect on them than his new outlook on life did. u see what im slaying? he was changed spiritually, and thats what his gf and friends actually took note on.

LittleMiss - 3/23/10 @ 2:30 PM

Oh sure I have no doubt about that, but the ink did give him an avenue through which he was able to minister to them. It was a common point of interest and allowed him to approach it without intimidating them, he was able to meet them on their own playing field, so to speak.

Japlace - 3/23/10 @ 2:46 PM

So if his tattoo allowed him to approach this in a way they were comfortable, then would it be fine for me to steal something so i have common ground to witness with a thief?

I ask in only to see where u stand :) not because i question what your saying.

Jeremih 17:9&10 (NKJV)

"9 The heart is deceitful above all things
and beyond cure.
Who can understand it?

10 "I the LORD search the heart
and examine the mind,
to reward a man according to his conduct,
according to what his deeds deserve."

Matthew - 3/24/10 @ 4:09 PM

I do not intend to ever get a tatoo, but I do not think that they are bad things. I dont think its like spray painting a church; couldnt it be like decorating it with beautiful objects that glorify God? Thats just my opinion.

HawkNFan - 4/7/10 @ 1:19 PM

Corey I agree with you. I believe that everyone is to tell others about Christ, but we are each called to do it in our own way. I was going on a mission trip this past SB and I saw one of my former teachers who is a believer and she and her sister were telling me that could see that God was going to use my abilities and talents given by Him to witness to others. There are some Christian tattoo artist out there, who use their talent (because you have to have talent to be a tattoo artist) to witness to others and to help others witness. God has set us on this Earth for a purpose, all to Glorify Him and to share His love with the lost. I agree with some of the others on this thread that it is from the Heart. When we are passionate about something, I believe that is from God and we are to pursue that. But as far as tattoos go, if it isnt out of spite for others, youve prayed about it with an answer from God and then its ok, as long as it glorifies Him. I wouldnt mind getting a small cross to be honest, but my family is agaisnt them so Im not going to beacuse that would be getting it out of spite for them not liking it.
Thats all I have to say.

Kelsea - 4/28/10 @ 10:49 AM

I have a small tattoo on my foot that says Give with a small cross on it. I got it with my sister and my mom, they have Live and Love. I think tattoos are fine, as long as they give glory to God. And tattoos arent for everyone. They are a serious decision. But my tattoo is personal reminder to me that Jesus gave His life for me, now Im going to live my life for Him.

And exactly what you said HawkNFan. The place we got our tattoos done, a couple from my church own it. And through the tattoo shop, they have witnessed to alot of people. They actually have information on our church and a devotional stitting out for each day. And the other people who work at the shop are also Christian. Its an awesome ministry.

Lex - 3/24/10 @ 4:22 PM

This is all a rather interesting topic, and my knowledge in scripture is nothing by far of what some of you hold. So by no means shall I be quoting from the Bible in what I say; essentially, this by no means holds anything useful, scriptually, to those who want truth.
I have six tattoos, five of which are self-glorifying. The sixth is a small gothic cross on my left ring finger with Psalm 18:2 as the band. It was my intentions that this ring would signify that God was my foundation and I would wait until marriage to give myself to my wife, as God had intended. But when I got the tattoo, nothing changed. I was the same person.
Getting a tattoo with scripture, imagery of Jesus, or representations of God, ect. does not make you any more of a Christian, than if you were wearing a cross. It is all materialistic really.
Look up the 2nd Commandment, *ok, I broke the 9th Commandment, but I could not help it, God has lead me to put in this scripture >.<* This is from my NKJV:
You shall not make for yourself any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy to thousands that love me, and keep my commandments.
Show me where in the Bible that God says it is fine that you bow down to the cross and worship it? Of course one would say, "Joshua, you dope, I am worshiping God, who put His Son on that cross!"
Why do you need representation to worship the Real Deal?
Tattoos do not glorify God, wearing crosses do not glorify God; 50 Cent has both of them on him and he has an album called Get Rich or Die Trying.
Believe me when I say, I have thought of all the kind of tattoos I should get that would honor God, but one day, when I was broken down, my heart open to Him, my soul eager to listen, He said to me, "Dont get anymore tattoos."
Again, I hold no key, no ULTIMATE answer, only God does, but you really need to ask yourself if thinking about getting one, Is there any reason why I need to convince myself it is ok?
God Bless

Corey - 3/30/10 @ 5:15 PM

I dont have any problems with tattoos, considering that I have 13 and counting. I use my tattoos as a way to express my Christian views and to hopefully reach those who cannot be reached by standard methods of outreaching. I know that my body is a temple, but sometimes we have to think outside of the box to make a huge impact to win people to Christ.

Cristobal - 3/30/10 @ 5:19 PM

well, its true, our bodies are the temple of God, so, you can see tatoos as, spray painting at church, as you said, or, beautifying the temple such as a murial

Japlace - 3/30/10 @ 5:27 PM

I can see where youre coming from Corey. But i think boldly preaching the Word of God without fear to EVERYONE would make a HUGE impact to win people to Christ. why not do that?

I am just confused on why to get ink for the glory of God, when GOD Him self said not to. The reason "its for the glory of God" or "it expresses my Christian views" are not valid because God commands us not to. so they cannot be truly for God, but for ourselves. even though we get it for the glory of God, or claim its for the furthering of Gods Kingdom, still doesnt justify it. ya know?

Corey - 3/30/10 @ 7:42 PM

Understandable, but I speak for the kids who are lost and shunned by society because I was one of them, because I didnt want to be the standard "run of the mill" Christian. When I was in high school I listened to bands like Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails etc. and I was confronted by those who tried to force the word of God on me, plus telling me that there were bands out there, at that time (mid 90s), that sounded exactly like the music I listened to. Im sorry, but Steven Curtis Chapman, Jars of Clay, and DC Talk were not even close and lets not even mention the constant judging. It was from that point I felt led by God to step outside of the box and make a difference in the lives of those who are truely lost and lead by example. Did you know that bands like As I Lay Dying, Demon Hunter, Nodes of Ranvier and others actually go on tour with those who do not believe, or worse yet, hate Christianity? They do this because they can reach those who would otherwise turn their back on God. I have been told time and time again that I am going to burn in hell because of the decision Ive made to get tattood, and if its true so be it, because its too late now, BUT I WILL continue to fight the good fight and win those who are lost to Christ, I WILL continue to get tattood, and when its my time to be judged by God himself I will stand proud of what I have accomplished, and I know a lot of other Christians, pastors included, that will suffer the same fate.

Corey - 3/30/10 @ 7:54 PM

P.S.

Christians that choose to get tattood are far from recieving the mark of the beast...and if sin has no measure in Gods eyes, then wouldnt ear piercing be just as "desecrating" as getting a tattoo? Because if thats true then ALOT of people are in trouble. And if my views are offensive to others then I apologize, but I dont apologize for being who I am and what I stand for.

Japlace - 3/30/10 @ 8:23 PM

I think you are doing an awesome work my brother.
I believe there is a major stronghold in the music world today. Christians today shove religion, when they should be showing love.

You know, i feel like God is telling me that He has a plan for You. and that He WILL use YOU to bring thousands of teenagers to Him.

I may not understand the reason why people get tattoos, but i do understand that God uses all of us.

I cannot relate to your testimony, but i can relate to the fact that we serve a big God. He made everyone of us. He knows our very thoughts.

I wanna tell you to never doubt your faith in God. and i feel like i need to tell you not to compromise, and to stay strong because the struggle is almost over. dont give up.
Idk if that means anything to you, but i felt you needed to hear.
Keep ministering to those in bondage of exclusion and depression. GOD is using you in mighty ways Corey, stay strong!
your brother in Christ, Josh.

Blake - 3/31/10 @ 9:00 AM

Our bodies are Gods temple and we need to keep them clean and undefiled. Tatoos also originated in paganism....so id definately stear clear of them.
