What kinda slang yo talking bout? ;)

daniel@seekGodnow.org - 7/12/10 @ 2:42 PM

like that..lol... talking improperly

Me - 7/12/10 @ 3:24 PM

Euh, what is slang???

daniel@seekGodnow.org - 7/12/10 @ 3:31 PM

slang: A kind of language occurring chiefly in casual and playful speech, made up typically of short-lived coinages and figures of speech that are deliberately used in place of standard terms for added raciness, humor, irreverence, or other effect.

maybe this would help you out yoan? http://www.wordreference.com/enfr/slang

Me - 7/12/10 @ 3:38 PM

Thanks =D

Sincerely, I have no idea if it"s worldly or not, and if it"s a sin to use it. But I"m interested on this, let"s see what others thinks :)

Sarah - 7/12/10 @ 3:42 PM

Kinda like... "heya, boyz!!!! How`s it goin` with ya`ll? Waull...gotta run, or I`m gonna git it fer sure!" ;P

Hahaha....=D Totally untrue, but thats a random little example of a few slang words. Even "cool" is slang for "awesome". So, it doesnt even have to be like what Japlace and I did.

As for, "Is it worldly?" I dont know...maybe, but sometimes its just meant in fun.

Allison - 7/12/10 @ 3:44 PM

I think it is just a way to shorten words. I dont think it is so much a sin as just a quicker way to speak. The only thing I dont think God wants us to do is swear/cuss. But using slang, no I dont think its a bad thing. But lets see what others say.

Sarah - 7/12/10 @ 3:44 PM

Sorry, everyone--that was not very clear, but my brain is still in "laughing gas land"...

Yoan...now do you know why I said what I did in that email? (Which you may not have opened yet)

daniel@seekGodnow.org - 7/12/10 @ 3:45 PM

meaning it just for fun is a completely different thing than making it a part of how you speak. i can understand certain cultural things, like "cool" and "that rules" or something, thats american culture. slang tho, usually isnt merely culture, its like a way. like at school, the bad kids usually have a certain way of talking. when its cool to be improper, thats when its wrong, i think.

Sarah - 7/12/10 @ 3:45 PM

Yeah, I dont like the swearing, and I dont think its appropriate for Christians, but I just dont know about the other. We do it unconsciously (but it doesnt always mean its right). Im off. What do others say?

daniel@seekGodnow.org - 7/12/10 @ 3:52 PM

i dont mean just swearing. i mean like saying "yo" and stuff. like sometimes, "fool" is slang for friend or something, like "hey fool" something like that.

dont you guys think christians should speak correctly? i think its _terrible_ how sometimes people choose to speak incorrectly in order to get attention or something...thats pathetic.

Japlace - 7/12/10 @ 4:22 PM

"like that..lol... talking improperly" - Daniel

Hahaha, ya i figured ;P

I dont think its a "bad" thing or as you said "_terrible_".
I do think that it is improper to speak in this manner when speaking in person. However, with friends or something of the like i do not think its "improper" at all, but when talking in general i think proper speaking and grammar is obliged.

So, when just playing or whatever i think its fun and alright, but when speaking in general i think we should be considerate and "proper" in our communication.

Sarah - 7/12/10 @ 4:25 PM

Oh dear....

How many of us say "Yeah"? Is that slang? =)

Derrick - 7/12/10 @ 4:33 PM

dont you guys think christians should speak correctly? i think its _terrible_ how sometimes people choose to speak incorrectly in order to get attention or something...thats pathetic.

I use slang all the time..Yet i can be very intellectual when i want to be. the whole way i am percieving what your saying in the statement above is that you have a pet pevee or a certain preference with speaking proper nd you think that it should become set in stone not to use it. lolz =)) God will understand what you are saying. lolz check out john 1:3-4
and I just think that as long as your not insulting people are hurting anyone its fine...because if you look at it the whole purpose of the 10 commandments was to help us out. 5 of them was to show how our relationship with God should be and the other half showed us how we should treat our fellow man.

when you say that christians should speak proper i would assume that speaking unproper would make us seem uneducated...which may be true..but thank God we dont get into heaven based on our IQ and our intellect but on our hearts

Derrick - 7/12/10 @ 4:33 PM

**All glory to God **

daniel@seekGodnow.org - 7/12/10 @ 5:27 PM

if you perceive statements made like that to merely be statements of my opinion, then you are misunderstanding.

the 10 commandments were never to show us what to do. no, they were only there to show us how evil we are. to live right, you dont simply avoid murder/adultery/coveting etc, no, though those are essential. thats not what the 10 commandments are for, otherwise we may as well still be under the law.

i believe its wrong to use slang...
1. when it is conforming to the ways of this world - such as what usually happens when you hang around & make friends with the kids who speak that way.
2. when the slang is vulgar or derogatory - which is what most slang is, esp. the slang in the title of the youtube video/topic that you, nazira, made.
3. when it is used simply to get show "i understand" or "im like you" to get peoples attention.

there was a commercial once where a kid is in his dirty room and his dad comes in and says a bunch of slang stuff including "clean up this joint" and then at the end the kid is just staring blankly and asks "...you want me to clean up my room?" - that is when slang is used as i described in point 3.

jake - 7/12/10 @ 5:37 PM

Wow this is legalistic. I talk how I want. I dont want to swear. I do, but I dont want to. That isnt affiliated with saying "slang"
" i mean like saying "yo" and stuff."

Really? How legalistic and pharisaeic can we get? Should we talk like harvard professors reading the thesaurus as much as the bible?
No, focus on winning the souls and loving people. Be all things to all people

Sarah - 7/12/10 @ 5:44 PM

Well, I agree... I mean, are we supposed to imitate the propah British folk who clearly pronounce each sound sepahrately? Technically, we maybe should, but how many people unknowingly slur things together?

Were not Harvard professors, and we cant always talk like that. There is a time to have fun.

Now, calling a friend "Fool", I would say is a no-no. The Bible says that if you call someone a fool, you have basically killed them in your heart.

daniel@seekGodnow.org - 7/12/10 @ 5:47 PM

ok here are the verses:

romans 12:2 - Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Gods will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

1 Peter 1:14 - As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.

1 John 2:15 - Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

all these say: dont be like the world, nor should we enjoy it

what is wrong with using proper english? whats wrong with calling your friends by name rather than "dog" ? i am not a dog and ive never enjoyed being called one.

however, what is wrong with using slang? it makes you sound dumb. really, it does.

do i assume that since a person uses slang, that he is dumb? no, but im aware that the person is careless of what i may think. intentionally or not, aware or unaware, he is encouraging me to think less of him by how improperly he speaks the language he knows. carelessness is never a good quality.

@jake,

i dont see why you accuse me of being legalistic and pharisaic, or mock me like that. thats really not necessary.

do i talk like that harvard professors? do i even capitalize the first letters of my sentences? why do you think i am out to turn us into them? this way that youve spoken of me is unkind.

jake - 7/12/10 @ 6:05 PM

All of those scriptures dont have any relevance. Or at least I dont see them.

Look, you are suggesting that we as a corporate body do not call our "homis" Dawg!
Who cares?
