Baptism Challenge posted in General on 5/3/10 @ 8:53 AM by Sandra

Who can tell me how many times Jesus was baptized and where it is in the bible :)

We came across some interesting information last night because I was challened by a catholic family member when I told them that my 13 year old son and I will be getting baptized together in 2 weeks. Now as you know Catholic religion believes all infants should be baptized, and I was raised catholic. They dont understand why I need to be baptized twice. Although I didnt need to debate with them, because this is for me not them, I found it interesting that no one knew the answer to this question.

Needless to say, we opened up the bible and started a hunt. I am curious how many of you know the answer.

Once.
It is recorded in all Matthew 3:13-17, Mark 1:9-11, Luke 3:21-22, but not John.
This account of Jesus Baptism is also mention in Hebrews.

ic where you may be getting with this though.

And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased." Luke 3:22

Matthew 3:16
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. Matthew 3:16

In Luke it says The Holy Spirit, but Matthew says the Spirit of God.

So either Jesus was baptized twice, or The Holy Spirit and the Spirit of God are the same.

I believe they are the same. Therefore Jesus was baptized once.

so, did i win the challenge? lol ;) jk.

but yes, many are led astray because they dont agree with the The Holy Spirit and The Spirit of God being the same, or they dont agree with the Godhead three in one.

nonetheless, i believe Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist (how ironic lol) one time. And The Spirit of God (or Holy Spirit, however way you look at it) came down in the form of a dove.
"And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. 10And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: 11And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." - Mark 9-11

This verse not only illustrates the baptism of Christ, but it describes the Trinity.
Firstly, it says the Spirit like a dove (so thats the Spirit of God) then it says the voice came from Heaven saying, "Thou art my beloved Son". (so now the voice is obviously the Father because if He said "Son" then He was the Father.) and the Son is referring back to the begging of the verse where it says Jesus ( the Son).

In conclusion, this verse shows the Godhead. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

I think what throws alot of people off is that the word trinity is never mentioned in the bible. And alot of devoted christians in history had a hard time understanding it.I know when I first heard about it I was like hold up all three is one! lol It blew my mind until I looked at scripture and the words that Jesus actually spoke saying the father and I are one and so on.....many examples of this.

One thing I love about the bible is everything isnt just laid out and spoon fed to us! It actually makes you look things up and really study it and it gives you great satisfaction when you start understanding scriptures!

Amen to that

People will always believe what they are comfortable with, and sometimes they arent always willing to dig deeper.

To those people I say: "Dont Be afraid" ;)
