raising a child with faith or not? posted in General on 10/2/12 @ 12:09 AM by Gabriella

hi everyone,
I read in another topic that there is need for a debate;)
so I thought, in case of an excercise that I have to do for school, let me ask you the question about raising children.
do you need to raise your children with faith or is it a task for schools and church?
where is the line that children are allowed to decide for themselves to believe or not?

thanks in advance:)

If and when I have children I would like them to be brought up to understand many of the worlds religions and then if he/she wants to follow one of those religions and sees a benefit to their lives for doing so then im all for it. I am an atheist but I would never tell a child to believe or not believe in something just because of what I think. Theres a quote by Buddha that pretty much sums up my thinking on it...

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”

I would raise my child with Christian values and teach them about God and why I follow Jesus but it would not be forceful. I would not force my child to go to church or anything. If you have to force your child to follow a religion, whoever you're worshiping is obviously not true. I believe my child will see the light of God through me or another source and will acquire faith on his/her own.
I was forced to go to a Catholic church my some of my caregivers and then I ended up living with atheists afterwards. Once I got out of the forceful Catholic home, I ran wild and did a lot I'm not proud of. Thank God I came to my senses and trusted the Lord. I was actually looking into Islam before Christianity but it was clear who to follow.
If you keep a person in a house their entire adolescent life, the moment they can escape, they will, regardless of the hostile world outside. If you give a person the option of staying in a house or going out into a hostile world, they will choose on their own to stay in the house.

I agree with Jordan. The Bible actually says to train a child in the way he should go, and it also says to teach your kids about God and what He has done.
Don't leave it up to the schools and churches, because they may not teach the truth. It is the parents' God-given responsibility to teach their kids the "fear" of the Lord. Don't force it, but teach them the truth nonetheless.

Yeah, I was going to bring up the same scripture Sarah used. The scripture continues to say "...and when he is old, he will not depart from it." It is a promise of God's faithfulness to parents who choose to lead their children in the way of the Lord.

Every child ultimately belongs to God. His will is going to direct their life one way or the other. But there is protection in following that which God has commanded. :)

I do agree with what Sarah and Steph posted. :)
