My boyfriend recently asked me what blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is, and why it is an unforgivable sin, but blasphemy against God the Father and Son is not. Honestly, I didn't know how to answer him, because I myself don't know! Does anyone have any insight?
Also, what happens when someone blasphemes the Holy Spirit? Are they banished from heaven, because they committed the one unforgivable sin; Does God take away the desire to become a Christian (because...what if you really want to be, but can't because you blasphemed?)
Do people agree or disagree with this:

I asked Zombie Pickles about this and she got the following answer from her pastor; it made a lot of sense to me.
The people that Jesus was talking to were incredibly deceived and the their hearts were cold. Jesus knew that no matter what these people heard, they would never turn to Him. They would blasphemy the Spirit of God and would never be forgiven because their hearts were so cold that they would never accept that forgiveness. The sin of never turning from your sin (and turning to Christ) is the only sin that cannot be forgiven because it cannot be accepted. Jesus is a gentleman, He will never barge into your heart. You have to invite Him in to be saved. If you never do that how can be forgiven? We have to accept forgiveness to get forgiveness and part of that is turning from your sin and turning to Jesus. There are people that no matter what they are told, will never accept that forgiveness and will always turn from Jesus and in turn will be guilty of the sin that cannot be forgiven

That makes sense. ^
Hmm... I would have to think about that for a bit.

There is no sin that ever be forgiven unless you dont confess it.

I got a similar answer as the one SITS posted from a pastor a couple years back. Blasphemy is a hardness of heart against the Truth thus a lifestyle that is in opposition to God. Thus unforgivable because you never turn in repentance to Christ.

Mark 3:29-30 "But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin. He said this because they were saying,'He has an evil spirit.' "
Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is committed by someone who knows God. We often hear people blaspheming God or Jesus, but as a non-believer they have never experienced the power of the Holy Ghost, His moving in their lives, or what He can do for them. Someone must be familiar with the Holy Spirit to actually blaspheme Him. Jesus was speaking to the teachers of the law, people who knew all about the law and claimed to be very spiritual, but who in reality, were great hypocrites. The Truth that Jesus spoke pricked their hearts, but they didn't want to accept it. So they said "He has an evil spirit".
I hope this makes some sort of sense.

Did anyone follow the link? If so, what did you think? Basically what CARM is saying is that the Pharisees blasphemed by saying Jesus' power came from the devil, and not from the Holy Spirit--they were taking His power and giving the devil the credit. What are your opinions on that?
Melodia, the Bible does actually contradict what you said. All other sins EXCEPT blasphemy against the Holy Spirit can and will be forgiven if we confess them, but the Bible does say that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit CANNOT be forgiven--ever. That's what makes it so serious! It's a sad reality, but it's also perfectly understandable. The Holy Spirit is a powerful part of the Trinity, and we need to recognize and respect that!
