Old Testament verses sound harsh posted in Advice on 5/16/12 @ 10:12 AM by With Love On Your Arms

I know that God is full of love and mercy but he is also holy. Some Old Testament verses sound a little harsh.

"But if the thing is true, and evidences of virginity are not found for the young woman, 21 "then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with j stones, because she has k done a disgraceful thing in Israel, to play the harlot in her father's house. l So you shall 1 put away the evil from among you.
(Deuteronomy 22:20-21)

Yeah, I've really struggled with this stuff, too. What I don't understand is why it was only the women. Why did God not create a rule for guys who didn't follow His plan of purity, too? Like, He gave them a test to determine whether the wife had been faithful; why not the husband, as well?

I do know that many of the harsh rules were because there wasn't really grace in the Old Testament. Because Jesus hadn't come yet, there really was no lasting freedom from sin. They were under the law--we are under grace.

This was Old Testament law, we no longer live under the law because Jesus came and died on the cross. Jesus fulfilled the law. So we live under grace.

The old testament was for a time where people were new to the faith. God had to make rules and let the people know he meant business. If anyone is to say if someone should die or not i'd say that'd be God.

I think Bono from the band U2 put it best:
"There's nothing hippie about my picture of Christ. The Gospels paint a picture of a very demanding, sometimes divisive love, but love it is. I accept the Old Testament as more of an action movie: blood, car chases, evacuations, a lot of special effects, seas dividing, mass murder, adultery. The children of God are running amok, wayward. Maybe that's why they're so relatable. But the way we would see it, those of us who are trying to figure out our Christian conundrum, is that the God of the Old Testament is like the journey from stern father to friend. When you're a child, you need clear directions and some strict rules. But with Christ, we have access in a one-to-one relationship, for, as in the Old Testament, it was more one of worship and awe, a vertical relationship. The New Testament, on the other hand, we look across at a Jesus who looks familiar, horizontal. The combination is what makes the Cross."

I know that God's justice is revealed in the Old Testament. But this verse does sound sexist. Women were expected to be "pure" virgins. If they were virgins, they were valuable but if they were unmarried non-virgins, they were treated like trash.

In 2 Samuel 13, King David didn't punish Amnon for raping his half-sister Tamar. Didn't he care about his own daughter?

I know it's important to go deep in the Scriptures because the Enemy twists the meaning of this verse and causes people to misinterpret this passages. If you can understand the Bible well, please help me understand this.

Deuteronomy 22:20-21 Don't they check if the guy is a virgin on his wedding day or do they only check if the girl is one? It sounds like a double standard.
