Where's the Line? posted in Get A Clue on 3/16/12 @ 9:12 AM by Ariel

I've been getting pretty frustrated trying to figure this out lately. So you know how there was the Old Testament law, and then Jesus came and now there's the New Testament law? There are lots of things in the old testament that we're like, "Oh, that doesn't apply anymore, that's old testament law" like burnt offerings, not cutting our hair, can't work on the Sabbath (what is the Sabbath, by the way?), certain kinds of foods are unholy to eat. But now, we all cut our hair, we don't give burnt offerings to the Lord, we work every day of the week, and we eat whatever we want (including jellyfish...ick!!). But then there comes this: people get confused. Because where is the line?? Why can we say that some things don't apply anymore but some still do? I don't get it. Like homosexuality. The verse about one should not lie with a man as a man lies with a woman for that is a detestable sin. I don't think that homosexuality is right in any way, but why does that one law still apply when the rest don't? It doesn't make sense to me, and in an argument, I would lose cuz I just don't have the answers

Homosexuality is mentioned in the New Testament as well. In 1 Cor. 6:13 Paul speaks against sexual sins. Actually read that whole passage there. A lot of those laws were to protect the people whereas some were telling them what was considered sin. It can be confusing. I know if they broke any law, they were sinning because they were going against what God told them to do. Maybe we should look at it, though, as in some laws were defining right and wrong and others were what God's people were to do at the time so they would remain separate from the heathen nations. I don't know if that made sense. Hopefully, it wasn't too confusing.

Ahhh I know what you mean! It's so complicated! The homosexuality thing is mentioned in the new testament.
As for the rest, I have no idea what it means when it says Jesus "fulfilled" the old laws but didn't abolish them. Idk I'm just as confused as you are.
Let me know if you figure it out because I would LOVE to know as well.

*As far as I know* ...

The religious laws like burnt offerings and not cutting hair, ect, were used to ensure the "holiness" of the individual. All the laws were meant to keep you holy and atone for sin if you broke the covenant of God (the ten commandments).

When Jesus came and died and was risen, the new covenant (through His blood) was enacted. No longer were those religious cleansing duties necessary for the removal of sin. In Christ, we are cleansed of sin through faith and belief in Jesus. Jesus fulfilled the law and we are in Jesus.

However, the covenant law (the ten commandments) are still the will of God. The difference is that, before Christ, we followed them to be saved (in addition to the ritual cleansing and holiness laws); now, we follow them because we have been given a new nature which is no longer in opposition to God, but rather desires God (because we are in Christ). Being in Christ is also why when we sin, we are no longer punished for our sin against an infinite God because Jesus (in His full Deity) paid the infinite price (the only atonement that could be adequate to cover an a sin by a finite being [aka man] against an infinite God). However, are new nature is toward God, rather than in opposition. The laws are no longer what separates us from God but rather a way to draw closer to God by following His will and submitting to the protections He has set for us.

I hope that made some type of sense. I feel like a ramble sometimes. :P

This might help understand the different type of laws...

Good point steph. I understand why we don't kill animals and such now but I'm still confused as to why we threw out the stuff about cutting hair... stuff like that. Like 1 Corinthians 11:13-16. I know I'm being difficult I'm just confused :(
