.... Because I'm curious :)
It has been my experience that most atheists I have either met or heard of have been intent on trying to prove that God does not exist. So my question is, why so intent on that goal? I mean, if something is not real, why spend your entire life trying to disprove it publicly? Why not just be like "okay, well I know such and such is not real, so that's it."? I mean, I know that the lockness monster, Bigfoot, and aliens aren't real, but I do not make it my life's entire purpose to prove that I am right; it would be a waste of my time.
And I hope this doesn't offend anyone, I am just genuinely curious. Usually people only publicly fight over real, legitimate, issues and it seems to me that if God is not real, then arguing that He isn't is a moot point and the biggest waste of someone's life ever.

Your so right some of them go over the top to try and get their point across it becomes there life mission to disprove something they think does not exist. For example i dont spend my life obsessing and trying to tell people big foot does not exist lol If they want to believe bigfoot thats fine i dont get angry at them or anything but so many atheists get so mad and often fling insults.

Also, Many will say, "yeah, but Christians spend time and their entire life saying that God does exist."
But that, at least to me, not only makes sense but seems like something you would expect. I mean, if God is real, than it is of utmost importance. Some might think its a waste of a life to do so, but if Christians are wrong, than it really doesnt make a difference....if atheists are wrong, it makes a whole lot of difference, so it seems strange to me that atheists would be so vocal about making a point about a God they dont believe even exists. lol
I woke up thinking about this...guess my mind was active last night. lol (also probably why the thought is a bit jumbled as far as my explanation of it) :P

A statement is only arrogant if it isn't true. If it's true, then it's fact. lol right?
PutHisBloodOnIt - 2/20/12 @ 11:56 AM
Yeah your right, we do go and tell people about Jesus because their is something at risk which is tge destination of ones soul. I think most atheists dont get we are not preaching Jesus for our own good or benefit we do it cause we care about them, another thing i think most people dont understand is how us christians can care and show love to people who hate us or dont like us.
Spirit in the Sky - 2/20/12 @ 2:35 PM
They are uncomfortable with the possibility of being wrong so they have to spend every waking hour that they are right and convince others also.

I dont know that many atheists attempt to prove that god does not exist simply because that premise just cant be proved or disproved. If any are attempting to disprove gods existence then I think they are just wasting their time haha. I would never say I can disprove a various god to exist but I can attempt to show how unlikely it would be. But many atheists do fight against various religious faiths simply because of the immense negative impact it can have on peoples lives. Now thats not to say that all religion is bad and that it does not help people because it certainly can and does.
But for example people are still burned alive in kenya because they are believed to be witches, and those people use the bible to do it(just as they did in the salem witch trials),killing of abortion doctors,9/11, people also use their religion to influence politics,to try to make their way into science classrooms,to infringe on the rights of others (homosexuals)etc. People tend to confuse belief with knowledge when they are two separate things, if belief was based on facts and evidence then it wouldn't be called belief or faith and when the two get confused is when serious problems can arise. As Ghandi once said..."I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." Although I would expand that to not only Christians but ALL people who use religion to do harm. The link below can show quite well why atheists have problems with religion...if all religious people only took the great bits out of their holy books and used that to live their lives atheists would most likely not have a problem.

Oh hey Ryan whats up man? Havent seen ya hear in awhile. Now to be honest you have to admit that there is a very very small percentage of christians who do kill or murder and then say its ok on behalf of christian beliefs compared to other religions where in there religious context they are urged to kill or spread there religion bu the sword, look at other religions and how they still torture, or kill anyone of other faith and look how christians treat people? You are bringing up a very very small percentage and the lunatic fringe.
Also another pointI wanted to bring up is that if it were not for christianity so many more people would starve and die of diseases. Christians donate more money to charities or time than anyone on this earth by a HUGE percentage. Not that its bragging rights by no means but thats what Jesus told us to do, to care for our enemies even if they hate you, now very rarely do you see this being taught in other religions.
Ryan - 2/20/12 @ 6:31 PM
Hey,how are ya man? Yeah I only reply when I see something that usually pertains to myself or something im interested in (am I the only atheist on the site?). Although the number may be smaller then other faiths so to speak anyone who dies because of the faith of another is one to many. One doesnt need a religion to do good either, why not do good without any type of religious context, numerous organizations such as doctors without borders do just that. Why in order to receive aid do some religious charities require one to attend a mass or sermon,or hand out bibles (the acts alone should be enough). It just bothers me that many times its used to promote a certain faith rather then the sole reason being to help out a fellow human being especially in 3rd world countries. Even many of those help a child charities we all see on tv are heavily based on a faith influence.
Many of the money that is donated through churches does not go directly to a charity however as most of it goes towards church services, paying pastors, employees, bills etc. often time the small amount that is left over gets donated. It is more likely that secular charities which atheists are obviously more inclined to donate to goes directly to that particular charity or need (as there is no focus on faith education etc.). They may not donate as much (smaller secular population) but their money is more likely used in a more efficient manner.

Glad your doing good! Umm I think you are the only atheist, one member use to be an atheist but soon become a believer and he use to give us a really hard time! Watch out Ryan you come around here enough you might be next lol Jk bro. But the charities I was talking about was not the money we tithe or give to church. I am talking strictly about doantions that go to set up water wells in other countries, places like compassion international which I personally support in which they feed and educate childern and pick them up everyday and so on. Christians by a land slide donate directly to causes more than other religion or belief syatems. If you dont beleive me than you can check the statistics on it. But please dont think its some sort of bragging rigfhts or something of pride thats not my point.
But I do get what you say in why some atheists fight against religion, but have you noticed the ones who are so emotionally into it and get so mad about it? Why do you think some act that way.
Ryan - 2/20/12 @ 7:53 PM
Yeah I figured I was the only one lol, I wouldn't argue that Christians donate the most by group since they make up the largest portion of the population in the country. I was more arguing against it being a strictly religious thing. Yes I have seen atheists that do get emotional and upset about it. Theres one on youtube called the amazingatheist and that guy is a total douche if I may say so haha. Well to be honest the ones I have seen that are more emotional about it are the ones that have had first hand negative experiences with whatever religion they left. For instance some atheists that were Jehovah witnesses,Mormons or fundamental Christians etc tend to get more emotional when talking just because of the at times severe impact the particular religion had on them and it comes out when they talk about it. Where as I who did believe but never had any truly negative experiences with Christianity tend to be much more mellow in my discourse. Also im sure personality comes into play as well I cant even begin to tell you how many times ive been told im going to burn in hell haha.
PutHisBloodOnIt - 2/21/12 @ 6:50 AM
Ha ha you cant help but laugh at the crazies who yell or tell someone bluntly they are going to hell, on behalf of them i sincerely apologize to you for their comments, because they obviously seem like very hateful people. I have to be honest it most so called christians make me sick.
Ryan - 2/21/12 @ 8:26 AM
Haha well I appreciate it, but I never take it personally telling an atheist they will burn in hell is like telling a 40 year old man that santa is going to put coal in his stocking for Christmas haha. I understand that religion can be very emotionally driven and at times that emotion takes over. Im also sure in there somewhat warped sense they see it as an attempt to "save" me.
Alpha - 2/23/12 @ 6:42 PM
Hi! :) If Stephanie is still curious bout her q, i'd say that a big reason atheists as well as theists can be so outspoken is because they are just explaining themselves. i think what your talkin bout, the super adamant defending of a persons beliefs (or attacking of anothers) is just the outcome of conflicting views between certain people.
When i considered myself agnostic, my conversations had a lot to do with explaining myself and my understanding of life, which happened to present as an atheistic view. The conficts were just me being a prideful human :P just the way christians can be abrasive about their theism.
does that make at all sense? :P
Alpha - 2/23/12 @ 6:46 PM
And this is a comment that deserves another topic entirely :P but i think that in viewing philosophy and theology as only means to an end of lives saved or spent, you have lost sight of things more important...
Nicole - 2/23/12 @ 7:53 PM
What Alpha? You mean fighting about details isn't the way to share Jesus?! I need to rethink my life...
;)
Alpha - 2/24/12 @ 9:17 PM
lol fighting for details is can be about fighting for your pride, and we know thats not worth fighting over. A person though, is worth fighting and dying for :) only you can know what youre truly fighting for.

Thank you all for replying to this post....I havent had a chance to read everything yet, but I will probably have responses when I do finally get a chance to read them. Just wanted to let you all know that I am planning to read them and respond if a response is warranted (I'm not just ignoring) lol :)
Stephanie - 2/25/12 @ 6:17 PM
Okay... finally read everything (for the most part) :P
I actually agree that religion should never be an excuse to persecute or torture anyone. It disgusts me when I think about people doing such grossly awful things in the name of Jesus; What makes it worse is that Jesus of the Bible, the Son of God, would never authorize or condone such behavior. I mean, He was the one who said turn the other cheek and be glad when you are persecuted for His names sake and to love your enemies and feed and clothe them!
It really makes me angry. I feel like turning some money changers tables. lol
I do agree that some of the more vocal groups could have been personally hurt by some of the crap that legalism and false religion (often claimed to be Christianity) has spewed.
As far as being conflicted about their views, that is also possible, though probably not the case for every vocal person.
I am pretty vocal about what I believe, but I am definitely not conflicted. I just love Jesus. I know what He has done in my life and I want that for others.
Yeah, arguing over details just makes people stand-offish )on both sides). I have to admit that I often get caught up in this, but I do feel that God is teaching me to just be a voice for Him. It is not my job to convince people of Jesus, just to converse about Him. :) But like I said, I get caught up in trying to convince far too often, gah I frustrate myself!
Japlace - 8/10/12 @ 12:51 AM
My question is why a lot of self claimed atheists hang out in the "comments" section of mainstream Christian songs on YouTube.
I think I know the answer, but I to am curious.
Jonathan - 8/14/12 @ 11:20 AM
I agree with you 110%!, I think their just scared of a positive change in their life an maybe something as big as God having the power to change them may be to much for them to handle.
