Liberty University v. Yale v. UCLA v. Oxford posted in Advice on 9/24/11 @ 4:54 PM by Jordan Dean

Liberty University in VA, Yale University in CT and University of California LA are my current college choices. All very good schools for various reasons. I plan to major in political science and government. God has blessed me with enough scholarships that I will not be paying for any of these schools regardless of which I attend. What do you guys think I should do and why?

Oxford University in the UK is another option but since I plan to be working for the American government, don't know if that'd be the best choice.

I would go to Yale if I had my choice between all of those schools.

It seems to me that if God has opened up the doors for all of these schools, then you should choose the one which will open up the best opportunities for you to be a Christian influence within the government. I think that Yale will offer the best opportunity.

If you are not feeling that God has a preference for you (or you don't feel like you are being led, as in a gut feeling about it) then it seems to me that God is allowing you to choose. I think that if God wanted you to go to a specific school over the other, than He would make it a more narrow choice, or almost no choice at all. ya know?

In making your choice, do consider the distance of each of these schools away from home. Thankfully, I didn't have to travel very far away to attend my undergrad program, but many people I knew came from across the country. They told me they had no idea how much it affected them to be away from home that long.

Of course, you may or may not have taken that into account already, but I'd say it's worthwhile to keep it in mind!

As someone with a family member who is an alumna of UCLA, I can tell you it's a fabulous school, especially for those subjects. Also, there are tons of opportunity in the area for fun, activities, and (most importantly!) internships. Then again, who says no to Yale? :)

Happy discerning!

@Stephanie - Yeah Yale is extremely convincing and it would feel so strange turning them down lol. I am not sure where God is leading me yet, very confused right now.

@Amelia - I don't have the handicap of having to worry about home or family or any of that so my options are a lot wider than most. I know many people from UCLA and they all love it, then again I know people from LU who seem to love it more and Yale, I don't even need to explain.

Liberty is a Christian school. It's where a lot of Christian artists have gone. If you thrive in Christian community and want that background, by all means go there. If you're more of a life-changer and want to influence those at other schools..go somewhere different. Yale is a great honor- but Yale is only a name in the kingdom of God. So make sure you choose the right school for the right reasons. Congrats though, man! College was great. Miss it myself.

@Redemption - thanks for the input. Every college is just a name in the Kingdom, it just matters which will most beneficial to God. I've never actually been in a Christian community so I'm not sure how I'd be at LU. I do know that I have impacted many lives positively in more secular communities, but I have also fallen and stumbled in them. It's a tough choice, thanks though.
PS: I cannot wait for college!

If I were you, Jordan, I would choose Yale. Yale is an Ivy League school and you can make a big impact on the students just by the way you live. Always remember to pray so God can reveal His plan for your life.

I know a tutor from a program in my school who went to Yale and he told me he really liked the school's personality.

And jsut wanted to ask, how did you get accepted by Yale? Is it something about a certain club you were in?

Jordan Dean - 1/23/12 @ 3:55 PM

@Jen - Well it's funny looking back at this post because God has drastically changed my plans. I'll be going into the Air Force Special Forces as a Pararescueman so I can help save lives and hopefully, lead those I save to Christ and be an example for all those in the military with me. After my service in this branch, I'll attend a university in which I'll get my Bachelor's and after that, law school.
As for getting accepted into Yale, that is difficult. I kept my GPA at over a 3.7 throughout high school and an SAT score of 1960 which is relatively low for Ivy League standards but with tons of varsity sports, extracurricular clubs (including class presidency) and full time jobs on my resume, they let me in. If you're pursuing an Ivy League, you must be willing to give up a lot of social aspects of your life. Email me if you want to talk more about it =]

If you ever do go to liberty it has a really nice campus!

Thats the only reason I wanted to go there, but they dont have a great program for what i wanted to do.
