ok so this year i am turning 16 and my parents agreed that i can get a tattoo if it is apropriate and is in an apropriate place.
im thinking of getting diamonds and the verse mathew 19:21 near my hipbone so you can see it when im in my bathing suit but not any other time that way it wont get in the way of me getting a job or something.
but i was wondering what the bible says about tattoos or if it says anything at all
i knows some churches look at it as wrong and some dont and i dont know whether they just dont want people to have the wrong image or if there is actual scripture on it.

We have tons of topic discussions on this if you search the word "tattoo" in the forum search bar. I got a tattoo, people are angry with me and I tell them its my problem not theirs. It is a sin in the old testament. If you search the other discussions on this you will find the exact verse.
My tattoo says "It is Finished" and I don't have any regret for getting it.
Personally I am not a fan of the location you chose simply because its going to attract attention to that part of your body which probably isn't a good place if you are in a bathing suit. I do think it is responsible of you to think of a location where people can't see it on a regular basis but i would suggest you put it on your upper back or on a shoulder, which is where mine is. Also (and I know it doesn't sound like a good idea but) you should wait a full year to get it. I found out what I wanted and waited a year to decide if I still wanted it and I did so I got it. But this is my opinion and it doesn't have to be yours
Bottom line of all of this is that you should think about your actions since they will be so permanent. You should pray about your actions and you should make a decision by yourself whether or not to get a tattoo knowing full well that it is indeed a sin. Even if you use it to spread the Word of God. Also note though that Leviticus 19:19 states that wearing poly-cotton is also a sin equal to tattoos and murder. Okay, thats my two cents lol

@Allysa Faith, they do actually cut in with the needle. You can't see the blood because it is mixed with ink when the artist wipes it off and there isnt a lot of it but you do bleed when you get a tattoo. Had to put that out there

Rather than getting a tattoo of this verse how about you simply just do what this verse says? Live your life by this verse be an example of a follower of Jesus! Also rather than relying on what others have to say about the bible spend time in the word of God and read for yourself what it has to say. You cant always depend on what people tell you because if you do you can easily end up believing in false gospels and get sucked into new age beliefs.

I agree with you PutHisBloodOnIt. That is the best thing to do. I don't think there is anything wrong with a little tatto but to get lots and to cover your body would be silly. I do recommend you put it somewhere decent too!

I don't know. I think that tattos are generally harmless unless you become addicted and you worship the ink instead of God.
Plus, it all depends on what you get. I've seen people with really nasty tattos from anything to naked women to flaming skulls with roses ofr eyes.
But what you want seems pretty OK to me.
I would agree wiht Cody on the placement.

I had written this a year ago on the topic of tattoos on these forums. This was really written in the Spirit, I believe.
"This is all a rather interesting topic, and my knowledge in scripture is nothing by far of what some of you hold. So by no means shall I be quoting from the Bible in what I say; essentially, this by no means holds anything useful, scriptually, to those who want truth.
I have six tattoos, five of which are self-glorifying. The sixth is a small gothic cross on my left ring finger with Psalm 18:2 as the band. It was my intentions that this ring would signify that God was my foundation and I would wait until marriage to give myself to my wife, as God had intended. But when I got the tattoo, nothing changed. I was the same person.
Getting a tattoo with scripture, imagery of Jesus, or representations of God, ect. does not make you any more of a Christian, than if you were wearing a cross. It is all materialistic really.
Look up the 2nd Commandment, *ok, I broke the 9th Commandment, but I could not help it, God has lead me to put in this scripture >.<* This is from my NKJV:
You shall not make for yourself any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy to thousands that love me, and keep my commandments.
Show me where in the Bible that God says it is fine that you bow down to the cross and worship it? Of course one would say, "Joshua, you dope, I am worshiping God, who put His Son on that cross!"
Why do you need representation to worship the Real Deal?
Tattoos do not glorify God, wearing crosses do not glorify God; 50 Cent has both of them on him and he has an album called Get Rich or Die Trying.
Believe me when I say, I have thought of all the kind of tattoos I should get that would honor God, but one day, when I was broken down, my heart open to Him, my soul eager to listen, He said to me, "Dont get anymore tattoos."
Again, I hold no key, no ULTIMATE answer, only God does, but you really need to ask yourself if thinking about getting one, Is there any reason why I need to convince myself it is ok?
God Bless"

honestly I think that is a disgusting place to put a tattoo, whether anybody sees it or not - because your husband certainly will. the thought of my wife having a tattoo on that part of her body sickens me. I'd want to see her body but a tattoo would take away from that, terribly.
Jon - 6/20/11 @ 8:11 AM
if you look through the forum enough you will see both sides of the argument, however that is a bad place for one because it would attract attention to the area, and I'm pretty sure you don't want to cause brothers in christ to stumble. (I would suggest shoulder instead)

I am not for tattoos and I believe scripture leans in the same direction. dont want to get into a circular dispute about this, but to you say. That is a very immodest place. To even consider such a thing is unwise.
KingsKid - 6/20/11 @ 2:43 PM
I believe that tattoos are against Scripture, but you can read all of my opinions on this if you search 'tattoos' int he search bar. I posted on other topics!

FIRST OF ALL I THINK WE WOULD HAVE TO BE CHRISTLIKE IN ALL WE DO AS CHRISTIANS.NOW ASK YOURSELF WOULD JESUS GET A TATOO? I DONT THINK HE WOULD. SOME PEOPLE SAY THAT WAS THE OLD TESTAMENT AND WE DONT NEED TO APPLY IT BUT IT ALSO SAYS THALL SHALL NOT KILL, DO WE ALSO SCRATCH THAT OF AND HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO THE OPPISITE, NO...... BUT ITS A GOOD DISCUSION THAT THE YOUTH NEEDS TO HEAR OUT.
Lex - 6/21/11 @ 1:58 AM
I do not think the "WWJD" question is the best to get across the point of whether or not He would. The better question would be "What Did Jesus Do?"
ANTHONY COTTO - 6/21/11 @ 9:58 PM
i'll try that nexttime lex
kaitlynn nicoleee - 6/22/11 @ 6:08 AM
i think if i do get a tattoo first of ye it will be in a diff place and second i will probly wait least till im 18 that way im sure i really want it
KingsKid - 6/22/11 @ 9:34 AM
Good idea! And make sure that you continue to seek God's will for you in this matter. He cares about this, too!
Jon - 6/22/11 @ 10:39 AM
you never want to get one and then regret it later. Make sure its something you really want.
Zombie Pickles - 6/22/11 @ 11:35 AM
Yeah, what Jon said. I saw these ppl that have spongebob on their entaire backs. It is just crazy
Chris Breshears - 6/22/11 @ 2:00 PM
Well, the Old Testament also talks about how it is forbidden to eat unclean animals, such as pig.
Then Jesus came along and said it's not what goes into your mouth that makes you unclean, it's what comes out of your mouth that makes you unclean.
So, I think, if Jesus were here, He would say something along the lines that it's not what goes on your body that makes you sinful, but it's what is in your heart that makes you sinful.
I hope that makes sense.. But it's not your body that makes you who you are. Your body is only for this lifetime. Soon, this world will pass away.. I would say that it's what you put on your heart that makes you who you are, if that makes sense.
But it's really up to you. I don't know the exact answer. I wish I did. =]
Gabriella - 6/23/11 @ 6:45 AM
i agree with Chris!
