moshing. stage diving. head banging. posted in Advice on 4/13/11 @ 11:07 PM by tyler

how do you guys feel about christians who mosh. stage dive. and head bang? i listen to metal. soo i see this stuff all the time. but its at christian concerts. people stage diving. moshing. and head banging. now if anyone doesnt know what moshing is. its where a big bunch of people just jump around. and bang in to everyone. it can get pretty bad at non christian shows. but at impending doom shows they ask people to get on stage and jump off. or sing. or for today shows. everyone just bangs into everyone. but some people dont think its right to head bang. or mosh but do you think its ok? i do!

I think it's fine as long as you dont hurt anybody!

David danced until all of his clothes fell off lol
Pretty sure he was not being conservative about his love for God ;)
But it can be harmful, so I mean honestly, use common sense and don't go out there punching out everyone to smack some Jesus into others lol

I love to, just try to get out of the pit if it gets to rough, thats for safety, not spiritual, reasons though

I don't mosh. Not because its wrong, just cuz I'm sorta scared. My uncle broken his leg and got a black eye in one of those things...
I head bang all the time!

Before I do something, I always ask...why? Why I am doing this? Is it for Gods Kingdom, or my own...?

Thats the question you need to ask yourself. We are not our own, remember that.

I'm not into it because it can be fatal. A guy died a couple years ago from being trampled. I don't have an issue with those who do as long they are mindful and respectful.

Whenever you read scripture any such rowdy and violent behavior is displayed by the mobs (such as those who assaulted Jesus and stoned or martyred the prophets), the pagans, or the demon possessed. People twist out of context David's dance as if it was some wild, sensual, erratic sort of behavior but it in no way was erotic or resembled moshing. Scripture doesn't paint it in that light.

In addition here is a quote from a pastor who was once for moshing in Christian circles,"This increased violence is spilling over into Christian moshing as well. The excuse for moshing continues to be that it's a great release of energy and aggression. But is anyone really getting rid of anger or aggressive feelings this way? Just the opposite seems to be happening. Kids are having such a good time being angry in the pit; they can't wait until the next concert to get angry and aggressive all over again. This means that moshing is actually reinforcing their aggressions, rather than releasing them."

Dave Williams, who was once the manager of Christian thrash metal band Seventh Angel and now runs Meltdown Ministries, has his own horror story of a mosh going badly wrong. "There was one Seventh Angel gig when a bloke in the mosh pit fractured his skull. There he was, covered in blood, saying what a fantastic time he'd had and what a fantastic band Seventh Angel were! It was really disturbing."

I think it's completely fine. However, I agree with George, women need to be careful about it when they're around rowdy guys.

i am convinced that such things are sinful behavior, especially moshing and stage diving.

wikipedia, something unbiased, pretty plainly says that headbanging is violent shaking of the head,

"Headbanging is a type of dance which involves violently shaking the head in time with the music, most commonly in the rock and heavy metal music genres."

it gives its really horrible origin, which is of actually banging one's head against the stage,

"The term "headbanger" was coined during Led Zeppelin's first US tour in 1969.[1] During a show at the Boston Tea Party, audience members in the first row were banging their heads against the stage in rhythm with the music."

and it goes on to explain how its unhealthy and dangerous,

"In 2005, Terry Balsamo, Evanescence guitarist, incurred a stroke from headbanging.[3] There have also been cases of people incurring whiplash from headbanging such as Craig Jones of Slipknot and it is common to experience headaches and stiff or sore necks as a result of headbanging."

this is what wikipedia says about moshing,

"Moshing is a dance in which participants push and/or slam into each other. It is most associated with aggressive music genres, such as hardcore punk and heavy metal. It is primarily done to live music, although it can be done to recorded music.[1]

In the 2000s, many variations of moshing exist, such as thrashing,[2] or the more extreme Wall of Death, and are typically done in an area in front of the stage which is referred to as the mosh pit or simply pit. In the Wall of Death, participants are directed away from the center of the standing area by a member of the band until a large, rectangular area is cleared, and, upon the band beginning the next song; the two sides perpendicular to the stage sprint at each other and collide in the middle."

i really cannot see that ever being God-ordained, i don't understand how any christian could see that as anything but sadistic behavior. it really sounds demonic.
