No, you cannot lose your salvation. You can backslide, but those who have come to Christ are saved. If someone has claimed to to be in Christ, there should be evidence of that inner working of the Holy spirit, I think that their are people who go through the motions but never actually believed. But, for those who actually came to faith in Jesus Christ, this is what the Bible says:

"looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." ~ Hebrews 12:2

- this tells us that we cannot have faith without God moving through us and working that faith. If we have faith in Jesus, the faith itself was and is an act of grace.

But then, the Bible also says this:

"being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ." ~ Philippians 1:6

- this is a promise that that faith, which He gave us, He will complete.

Lastly, Isaiah 43:

"Isaiah 43 (New International Version, ©2010)

Isaiah 43

Israel’s Only Savior

1 But now, this is what the LORD says—
he who created you, Jacob,
he who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
3 For I am the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
I give Egypt for your ransom,
Cush[a] and Seba in your stead.
4 Since you are precious and honored in my sight,
and because I love you,
I will give people in exchange for you,
nations in exchange for your life.
5 Do not be afraid, for I am with you;
I will bring your children from the east
and gather you from the west.
6 I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’
and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’
Bring my sons from afar
and my daughters from the ends of the earth—
7 everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,
whom I formed and made.”
8 Lead out those who have eyes but are blind,
who have ears but are deaf.
9 All the nations gather together
and the peoples assemble.
Which of their gods foretold this
and proclaimed to us the former things?
Let them bring in their witnesses to prove they were right,
so that others may hear and say, “It is true.”
10 “You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD,
“and my servant whom I have chosen,
so that you may know and believe me
and understand that I am he.
Before me no god was formed,
nor will there be one after me.
11 I, even I, am the LORD,
and apart from me there is no savior.
12 I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—
I, and not some foreign god among you.
You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “that I am God.
13 Yes, and from ancient days I am he.
No one can deliver out of my hand.
When I act, who can reverse it?”

God’s Mercy and Israel’s Unfaithfulness

14 This is what the LORD says—
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“For your sake I will send to Babylon
and bring down as fugitives all the Babylonians,[b]
in the ships in which they took pride.
15 I am the LORD, your Holy One,
Israel’s Creator, your King.”
16 This is what the LORD says—
he who made a way through the sea,
a path through the mighty waters,
17 who drew out the chariots and horses,
the army and reinforcements together,
and they lay there, never to rise again,
extinguished, snuffed out like a wick:
18 “Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.
20 The wild animals honor me,
the jackals and the owls,
because I provide water in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland,
to give drink to my people, my chosen,
21 the people I formed for myself
that they may proclaim my praise.

22 “Yet you have not called on me, Jacob,
you have not wearied yourselves for[c] me, Israel.
23 You have not brought me sheep for burnt offerings,
nor honored me with your sacrifices.
I have not burdened you with grain offerings
nor wearied you with demands for incense.
24 You have not bought any fragrant calamus for me,
or lavished on me the fat of your sacrifices.
But you have burdened me with your sins
and wearied me with your offenses.

25 “I, even I, am he who blots out
your transgressions, for my own sake,
and remembers your sins no more.
26 Review the past for me,
let us argue the matter together;
state the case for your innocence.
27 Your first father sinned;
those I sent to teach you rebelled against me.
28 So I disgraced the dignitaries of your temple;
I consigned Jacob to destruction[d]
and Israel to scorn."

Its pretty self-explanatory, but the whole chapter is about how God called us and redeemed us, and that for His names sake (verse 25) He continues to blot out our sins. It also talks about the fact that nobody can undue what He has done.

So the short answer is no, once you are saved, you are saved. Although, I do think a changed life will generally reflect that inner working of the Holy spirit (evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit - Galatians 5:22).

PutHisBloodOnIt - 12/30/10 @ 8:20 AM

I also to believe once saved you cannot lose it! BUT... some are walking around thinking they are saved but they are really not, I bet that out of all who claim to be christians about only 15% are truly saved I know it such a low percentage but this is what I believe, so the ones who are truly saved will not lose salvation but the problem is the ones who think they are saved but do not have the holy spirit within them.

Curtis - 12/30/10 @ 11:13 AM

it's sad, but i think your right on that percentage PHBOI

Donald - 12/30/10 @ 2:33 PM

Its kind of hard to percentage how many people are saved. If someone says that the believe and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, then all we can do is believe what they tell us. You are either save or not saved.

Returned_By_Faith - 12/30/10 @ 2:37 PM

True that Donald!
We the people are one or the other.

Steven - 1/1/11 @ 3:26 AM

John 10:28-29
28-And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

29-My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

Steven - 1/1/11 @ 3:29 AM

How can you lose something eternal? If God takes away our salvation, then it wasn't eternal to begin with. Eternal never ends.
We can lose fellowship with Him & His people thru sin, but not our salvation.

PutHisBloodOnIt - 1/1/11 @ 5:21 AM

Well Donald if you look at the U.S population percentages when asked what religion you are a majority over 75% or possibly more claim to be Christian, now do you honestly think just because you claim to be christian that they are true followers of christ? I dont think so, if everyone who claimed to be christian really where dont you think more churhes would be full during the week? Our nation or government would try to take Jesus out of everything. Everything I present to you can be statistically backed up, So Donald and Retrned by faith I urge you to look up the statistics and take a look at the real world,and you will see that half of the U.S population who claim to be christian, are not true followers of christ.

Donald - 1/1/11 @ 8:22 AM

@puthisblood-So if i didn't go to church and you never saw me read my bible, does that make me an unbeliever? Or i went to church every sunday for a couple of years, read the word of God and said that i trusted in our Lord Jesus Chrit and then fell into sin. Does that also make me an unbeliever? Just because people don't go to church, or seem like the live a life for Jesus doesn't make them an unbelieve. Your right there are a lot of people out there who don't know or trust in christ. But we can't say “oh 75% of America is saved but I only think 35 out of the 75 who say the trust in Christ are saved” who are we to judge? Well we aren’t, if they say they are saved, then you better trust that what they are telling you is true. But the possibility of the whole 75% telling the truth is probably not very likely, but still who am I to judge?

True follower of Christ is different from being saved my friend. Being saved simply means trusting in Christ. Following Christ means walking with him, praying without ceasing, reading his word daily. Now how many people can honestly say that they are a true follower of Christ? How many actually read the word of God daily, pray without ceasing? Doing those things is deeper than just getting up reading a couple of chapters pray and then go on with the day, hours of your time daily. I have a friend who does not live a Christ filled life, does not do what he should do and not walking with God. He said one day “I am a sinner and I walk with in it every day, and when that day comes when I have to stand before the Lord all I can say is God I know you and trust in you, but I didn’t ever took the time to walk with you.”

PutHisBloodOnIt - 1/1/11 @ 8:29 AM

Ok obviously you really misunderstand what I am saying. And yes if you are a true follower of Christ you are SAVED my friend. And stating these statistics are not judging anyone, I think you need to open up your eyes a little bit more.

KingsKid - 1/1/11 @ 10:39 AM

I do not believe the idea "Once saved, always saved" There is a point where people who were saved turn their backs on God and lose their salvation. If one backslides and says they do not believe in God they are not saved. They turned their back on God and His Word. If someone was supposedly saved and then backslid, PHBOI, you're saying that they were never really saved in the first place. While this may be true for some people(they think they can fake it,God doesn't notice etc...) I don't believe it is true for everyone who backslides, there are people who were genuine Christains and then(maybe during a hard time in their lives;maybe through fame), they turned their backs on God and lost their salvation. If the "Once saved, always saved" idea is true then it doesn't really matter what we do, we are always saved. That makes it so that we can sin and it doesn't matter; we are always saved.
Like Donald was saying when we come to Christ we trust in Him. But then we have to continue our walk with Him and grow in Him. This helps us to become stronger and resist temptations that will come our way, trying to dissuade us from following Christ and receiving all He has for us.

Christopher - 1/1/11 @ 3:36 PM

We should leave the percentages to the mathematicians for no good can come from further dividing Christians into the saved and the unsaved. Well, unless your goal is to lead a crusade to ensure all Christians are saved. My faith in His Word casts doubt in my mind those who are saved number so few. Not all Christians can shout His Word from the mountains and not all Christians have the gift to effectively pass His Word on to others. Some Christians show us the way by leading their lives in perfect, quiet, reflective obedience to His teachings. With humility and quiet strength, they convey what the spoken and written word can not. We sometimes go unnoticed and lead our lives in quiet devotion, but these things do not make us any less of a Christian or change the truth of our salvation. I will pray each day that of the 75% who claim to be Christians that 75% shall receive salvation. Some would call this naive, I call it faith.

PutHisBloodOnIt - 1/1/11 @ 7:43 PM

No ones dividing anyone we are all on this planet and have the same struggles, I was simply pointing out that most people who claim to be christians are not which means they are not saved, if you sit in a garage does that make you a car? No, just because you go to church does that mean your a christian or saved? No.

Alpha - 1/1/11 @ 9:42 PM

PHBOI, what is your definition of "being saved?"

PutHisBloodOnIt - 1/2/11 @ 8:11 AM

Same definition of what the bible claims being saved is in laymens terms "having your sins forgiven" through accepting Jesus as your Lord and saviour.

Donald - 1/2/11 @ 3:53 PM

PHBOI- i didn't misunderstand what you were saying. i understand how sinful and unfollowing to God this world is. we are just talking about to different things, your talking about true followers of Christ and i'm talking about people who are just saved.

Alpha - 1/2/11 @ 4:53 PM

"Same definition of what the bible claims being saved is in laymens terms "having your sins forgiven" through accepting Jesus as your Lord and saviour."
-And why do you think that people believe they are "saved," but actually aren't?
I mean, if they believe they 'have their sins forgiven by accepting Jesus as their Lord and Saviour,' then why would you later say they didn't, if they eventually reject Christianity?

Donald - 1/2/11 @ 7:25 PM

The devil believes in our Lord Jesus Christ. He was there by God, he has seen God’s Glory. Its by grace through faith that we are saved. It not simply believing in him, many people believe in God all the demons and satan believe in God. Its but trusting in him (faith) in Jesus Christ our Savior.

@Alpha-i'm not sure if i was anywhere close to answering anything you just said? lol

Donald - 1/2/11 @ 8:26 PM

I really liked this video!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSNWOuUjrBA
there are four of them (four parts)

Alpha - 1/2/11 @ 9:04 PM

Oh, I understand that, which is why I specifically said "if they believe they 'have their sins forgiven by accepting Jesus as their Lord and Saviour,'"
