What about Harry Potter? posted in Get A Clue on 10/6/10 @ 7:17 PM by Zombie Pickles

I was wondering what you all thought of the Harry Potter books. Most Christians I talk to look at me like I'm wierd because I read a book that is about witch craft. But I think that, as long as you are strong in your faith and know that it is fiction it is fine. What do you think?

Hiya, hmm.. for me, personally, I don't want to read fictional witch craft, because I'd be entertaining myself with witch craft stories. And although I would never do witch craft, when I read about those things, I think about those things, and that can be damaging. Like, for example, we become desensitized or, like, I use to listen to a lot of non-Christian music and it had a lot of bad words in it and though I never thought I'd say those things, I found that when I got angry over something, those words just came out of me out of no where even though I thought I'd never say them. Not saying out of no where you will do witch craft, but it still has some sort of damage I think. What we take in gets recorded in our brain. And though we would never choose to do the bad things learning about witch craft because we love God, it's like, why bother with it? This is just me, you may feel differently about this, though I would still recommend not entertaining in that sort of entertainment anyway. All I can think of right now is Phillipians 4:8 which says "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." I think God even cares about the entertainment we put in us, not just what we do in "real life" (technically, entertainment is in our real life!) I have not read Harry Potter so I have no idea what it says about witch craft or anything. But these are my views :) To understand witch craft's history to better be able to talk to those who do witch craft about God, I'm ok with, because it's helping getting a background in order to know who you are dealing with in order to help them know about God. But that's a different thing and has nothing to do with entertainment of course! I think asking God what you should do with this, is best, cause He knows what is healthy for you, and what is not :) Hope that was helpful and not sounding intruding :)

Great thoughts! I have considered those things carefully. I do like that verse. There is a difference between books and music though. The the Harry Potter books, there are many good themes that just happen to be mixed with witch craft. I appreciate you answering. Many people that I have met have the same opinion

O.0 - 10/6/10 @ 7:53 PM

Mm, good themes can be learned from :) I think you should pray about it :) Music and books are different, but any bad coming from either one can get stuck in one's head.. even bad stuff from movies.

Zombie Pickles - 10/6/10 @ 7:56 PM

That true. I will pray bout it. Thanks :) I know that some people have actually converted to witch craft bcuz of these books. But I know that it is wrong. IT is all in opinions I guess

O.0 - 10/6/10 @ 8:03 PM

Yeah, it is in all opinions, for people at least. But that's why people should pray about the things they're not sure of (or what they think they are sure of, also!), cause God I know has something beyond opinion! :D But yeah, pray about it :)

People have probably gotten into witch craft from these books merely because the books make it look cool. They have this sort of fantasized image of it. But they don't realize that witch craft springs from evil. It may or may not look cool to some one, and it may or may not be embellished through stories, but wow, what a sad thing for those who get into it, they don't realize what they are REALLY getting into, no matter how they understand/picture it! :(

Zombie Pickles - 10/6/10 @ 8:08 PM

That's true. I really think it is sad how many people get decived by these things

O.0 - 10/6/10 @ 8:09 PM

Yeah, it is really sad. One of my many mottos is "The Truth will set you free" it's such a wonderful thing, but a lot of people just don't see/get it!

Zombie Pickles - 10/6/10 @ 8:10 PM

I know. One day though, every knee will bow.

O.0 - 10/6/10 @ 8:11 PM

Yup. That's what the power of God is for, to soften the hearts of those who have become hardened, and we are to help when given the opportunity to! Really cool (well, the bad situation isn't, but God and us in Him is lol) :D

O.0 - 10/6/10 @ 8:13 PM

...well, God's power isn't JUST for that lol, and technically it's not "God's power" but just God himself, :D but yeah :)

Zombie Pickles - 10/6/10 @ 8:14 PM

Thats also true. But we are on this earth to help those who are decieved by satan. So we should do it! :D

O.0 - 10/6/10 @ 8:15 PM

Oh yeah, I didn't mean we shouldn't ;P

daniel@seekGodnow.org - 10/7/10 @ 4:05 PM

sadly, since no one else will say it:

by taking entertaining yourself with stories of witchcraft, you make yourself a friend to the world. you make yourself an enemy of God

in the old testament, it is always very clear that God hates witchcraft. He hates it.

but who likes it? the devil and those who are his. in contrast, those who are God's hate hate God hates.

so it all gets down to whether or not you like what God hates. do you?

if you are strong in your faith, you do not play with the devil by reading his books for fun

Zombie Pickles - 10/7/10 @ 4:23 PM

@daniel hey man, I understand wher you are coming from. But just cuz you believe this doesn't mean that you have to bash me because of what I believe

KingsKid - 10/7/10 @ 5:18 PM

I have never read the Haryy Potter books and never intend to. Simply because I know they are to do with witchcraft and God does not approve of that. The books may have some good themes, but the way I look at it is this: Why try to siphon through the mixed stuff when there are so many other good, wholesome books to read that will help to be closer to God? I agree with your first post there, O.0. It makes a lot of sense. We might think we are strong enough to resist temptation to, for example, say bad words. But the Bible says," He who think he stands, take heed lest he fall." I cannot remeber the reference right off the top of my head but I could post it here if someones wants me to.
@ZombiePickles Why did you post this topic?

Zombie Pickles - 10/7/10 @ 5:20 PM

I wanted to see what reactions I would get. I get alot of fredback like this.

KingsKid - 10/7/10 @ 6:53 PM

@ ZombiePickles Did you want people to agree with you or did you expect them to disagree? Why do you ask this question so much?

joseBloodBought - 10/8/10 @ 3:03 PM

If you feel like Daniel bashed you by giving you biblical truth than buddy you might want to really study what biblical correction and submission is all about. Daniel actually responded to you very mildly. This question has a simply complex answer. The simple answer is that reading a Harry Potter book may be permissable, but is at all beneficial? No. especially when we are told to do all things to the glory of God. Witchcraft is of the devil and anything that promotes it is not to your benefit. Why then would you want to read anything that doesnt benefit you? Don't put your hand over the fire to make sure it's hot. trust me. it's hot.

PutHisBloodOnIt - 10/8/10 @ 5:12 PM

I have never seen harry potter or read any books but I havehad the jelly beans that taste like weird things like grass and crayons.
